Five Stages of Recovery

Poem By Portia Nelson

Chapter I

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in this same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it there.
I still fall in… it’s a habit… but,
my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.”

Mindfulness of Emotions – Adapted from Mindfulness Skills Workbook for Clinicians and Clients by Debra Burdick, LCSWR, BCN

“Find a comfortable position, close your eyes if you feel comfortable.

Take a few moments to focus on your breathing, just noticing your breath without changing it.

Pause.

Notice how you feel in the present moment.

Without judging just be aware of how you feel.

What feeling are you experiencing?

Try and name the emotion.

Is it pleasant or unpleasant?

Is the feeling steady or coming and going?

Is it changing in intensity? Or is it staying stable?

Gently maintain your attention on your emotion.

Have you felt this emotion before? Have you felt it today?

Is it coming from the past or the present?

Notice your breath.

Does your posture match the feeling?

How does the emotion show up in your body?

Where in your body?

Is there any part of your body that is uncomfortable?

Have you noticed this sensation before?

Are your muscles tense or relaxed?

Notice your facial expression.

As you notice thoughts, simply acknowledge them, dismiss them and bring your attention back to your emotion.

Allow and accept the emotion without judgment.

A gentle reminder that you are not your emotion.

Investigate in this present moment the state of the emotion.

Do you tend to hold onto certain emotions?

Do you reject others?

Bring your attention back to your breath.

Gently bring yourself back to the present moment.
